Complete Cake Size Guide in Pakistan: Pounds, Kgs, and Servings

Every cake order starts with the same question: How big it should it actually be?

You see a design you love on Instagram. You know the flavor. You know the date. But the baker asks "how many pounds"? and suddenly you are doing mental arithmetic.

In this guide, you will find pound-to-kilogram conversions, a serving chart built for the way we actually cut cake in Pakistan, and honest advice on serving, sizing, and cake design.

The short answer: A 1 pound cake feeds 4 to 6 people, a 2 pound cake feeds 10 to 12, and a 5 pound cake feeds 25 to 30. Scroll down for the full chart.

How cakes are measured in Pakistan: Pounds or Kilograms

Most bakeries in Islamabad and Rawalpindi sell cake by the pound. Culture, traditions, convenience, and consumer familiarity explain why pounds are still preferred over kilograms. Some list weights in kilograms. A lot of cake recipes use grams. Plenty of customers think in inches because that is what international size charts use. When converted, all these describe the same cake.

Here is the conversion you need:

In short, double the kilograms to get pounds and halve the pounds to get kilograms. This shortcut is accurate enough for ordering.

Remember that weight is not the same as diameter. A 1 pound is usually about 6 inches across. A 2 pound cake is about 8 inches. But a tall cake and a short cake can weigh the same and look completely different on the table. Always confirm both the weight and the height with your baker.

Party cake cutting chart showing slice yields for 2-tier and 3-tier cakes — 8lb, 11lb, 14lb, and 18lb combinations with approximate party slice counts
Reference guide: party slice yields for standard tiered cake combinations. Actual counts may vary based on cutting technique.

A party slice is the one you would actually hand someone at a birthday and it is roughly 4 cm by 5cm. A dessert slice is the thin one served after a heavy dinner, closer to 2.5 cm by 5 cm. The same cake feeds nearly twice as many people if you cut it the second way.

Cakewalk recommends using dessert slices only if the cake is genuinely an afterthought to a full meal. These figures are a guide. Cutting style, cake height and who is holding the knife might change the real number.

How to choose the cake size by guest count?

Below is a general suggestion on choosing the right size by guest count:

2 to 6 people

For a small family birthday, proposal, couple anniversary, or gifting purpose, a bento cake or a 1 pound is right.

8 to 15 people

This is the most common custom cake order we receive in Islamabad. A 2-pound cake covers 10 to 12 people easily including your immediate family and a handful of friends. You can go for 3 pounds if children are involved as they usually eat the icing part and abandon the rest.

20 to 30 people

For office birthdays, extended family gatherings, first birthdays, or intimate nikkah events, a 5 pound cake at 25 to 30 slices is the safest choice.

40 to 70 people

Past 40 guests, a single round cake becomes hard to cut evenly and awkward to transport. Two tiers is usually a better choice. Some people also get a 5 pound cake for the cutting moment, plus two to three dozen cupcakes to serve alongside.

100 or more people

For grand weddings, reception, and anniversary events, most people order a display cake for the photos and cutting, then serve guests from cupcakes, dessert platters or a plain sheet cake kept in the kitchen. It costs far less than sizing a three-tier fondant cake to feed 300 people, and nobody at the event can tell the difference. Learn how to order a wedding cake here.

How height, shape, tiers change the math for cake size?

Here's how your cake design can affect cake sizing:

Height

A 6 inch height holds more cake than the standard four inches at the same diameter. An 8 inch tall cake serves close to what a 10 inch standard cake serves. If you want more servings without a bigger footprint on the table, go for tiered cakes or ask for extra height.

Shape

A square cake feeds more people than a round cake of the same width because there is no curve wasted at the edges. An 8 inch square yields roughly 30% more slices than an 8 inch round. Heart-shaped and other customized shapes yield fewer.

Fondant

Fondant adds weight but not servings. A 3 pound fondant cake has less actual cake inside it than a 3 pound cream cake. If you're thinking to order fondant cake, count the guests carefully and size up by half a pound.

Toppers and structures

Sculpted 3D cakes, dummy tiers and heavy decorations all add weight that nobody eats. Always ask your baker how many edible servings the design actually gives you.

What are some cake sizes and their prices in Islamabad

Weight is the main thing that moves the price, but it is not the only thing. Two cakes of exactly the same weight can differ by thousands of rupees.

Following factors affect the cost of cakes:

● Design complexity: hand-piped details, sculpted figures, sugar flowers

●Premium fillings: Lotus Biscoff, Nutella, fresh fruit, imported chocolate

● Frosting selection (fondant, cream)

● Flavour selection (chocolate, coffee, vanilla)

● Tiers

● Urgent orders

Pricing starts from PKR 3,200 for a simple 2 lb birthday cake. The cost of a 3 pound multi-tier, event cake starts from PKR 5,400 minimum at Cakewalk.

What common sizing mistakes should you avoid

There are five sizing mistakes we see every week. Avoid:

1. Ordering from a photo instead of a weight

2. Counting the invite list instead of the eating list

3. Forgetting the cake follows dinner

4. Ordering a cake that will not fit in the fridge

5. Under-ordering for a first birthday

How to cut a cake for better serving?

The serving numbers in the chart above assume the cake is cut properly. Wedge slices look natural but waste cake and give wildly uneven portions on anything above 8 inches.

For larger cakes, cut in a grid instead:

  1. Slice off a straight line about 5 cm in from the one edge, right across the cake

  2. Cut that strip into pieces about 4 cm wide

  3. Move 5 cm further in and repeat

In this way, you will get even rectangles and the right number of servings according to the chart. For tiered cakes, remove the top tier first, then cut each remaining tier the same way, starting from the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people does a 1 pound cake serve?

A 1 pound cake (~6 inches) serves 4 to 6 people with generous party slices, or up to 8 with thin dessert portions.

Is a 1 kg cake enough for 10 people?

Yes. A 1 kg cake is roughly a 2 pound (8 inch cake) and it comfortably serves 10 to 12 people. If children are among the guests or you want leftovers, go to 1.5 kg.

What size is a half kg cake in inches?

A half kg cake is approximately 1.1 pounds, which works out to a 6 inch round cake at standard height. It serves 5 to 6 people.

How much does a 2 kg cake cost in Islamabad?

Price depends on the finish and design more than the weight alone. For instance, a simple cream cake and a detailed fondant cake at the same weight have different prices. Send your design through our custom cake form for an exact quote within 24 hours.

Can I order a custom weight instead of a standard size?

Yes. We bake to the weight you need rather than to fixed sizes, so if 3.5 pounds is what your gathering calls for, that is what we will make.

How many tiers do I need for 200 guests?

For 200 guests, a three-tier cake in 12, 10 and 8 inch tiers gets you to roughly 130 servings. Most couples in Islamabad pair a two or three-tier display cake with cupcakes or a kitchen sheet cake rather than sizing the whole cake to the guest list.
